Declutter your wardrobe in time for Spring

Have you felt depressed in the morning, looking into your closet and trying to figure out how to make out your wardrobe, or what to wear? You are not alone. Around one in ten women in America feel the same way, and a quarter will admit that their closet spaces are completely disorganized.

Many of us have to face a long commute, or a full day ahead of work, so why do we add more stress before even stepping out of the front door? It is time for a change, so in the spirit of Spring or ‘spring cleaning’, we will explore how we can cut down on time for our wardrobes in a 2-post series.

Today, we will look at the Japanese method of cleaning and how we can declutter our wardrobes for a fresh start this season.

You are probably familiar with the term Konmari, from organizing guru Marie Kondo, a popular household name in recent years, where you sort and discard your items based on whether they ‘spark joy’. This idea though comes from a popular concept in Japan related to cleaning, called Danshari (断捨離). In Japanese Kanji, it stands for ‘refuse’, ‘discard’, ‘separate’, but in essence it means to clean and tidy up or purge, of physical and mental excess. And while the term is catching waves in recent years, even danshari is not an new concept and has roots in Zen Buddhism, which teaches to live with more simplistic, meaningful lifestyles. With that in mind, you can apply the danshari to add clarity to your mind and closet space.

Clean out your wardrobe

1) You need to take everything out of your closet. Set out your clothes into piles – for example pieces that fit your lifestyle and goals, pieces you don’t fit anymore, pieces you can sell, repurpose or give away. Go through the piles again and apply the konmari method to each of them – does it spark joy? If not, give your appreciation, say goodbye then move on.

2) Once you have separated what you will not keep and will keep, then it is time to put things back into the closet. Organize your space so your items you wear most often is in easy reach, and most of your items are visible. If you can not see it, then it will be easier to forget and left unworn. Keep seasonal items out of the way in suitcases for convenience or compression bags to save space.

3) Use storage organizational items like hooks, hangers and drawer separators to keep things neat, and organize your closet to colors, styles or categories. Make your closet look warm and welcoming like you are walking into your own little boutique made just for you, so instead of feeling dread when you open your closet, you feel inspired.

Spend one day to give your closet a makeover and give yourself a fresh, positive new lease on Spring. Stay tuned for part 2 next week, how to prevent clutter in your closet through the future choices you make.

Print story – new spring florals

Hi everyone, it’s Yuko from the kay me atelier!

The weather is warming up here in Tokyo, especially around my home, and I can see beautiful cherry blossom every day. It’s also lit up at night and looks so enchanting – I just have to take a detour on the way back from the station!

Let’s get into the spring mood with our beautiful florals! Our new flower print is really popular already…

I think kay me’s florals are so much fun to wear and coordinate, with monotone styles and abstract graphics too.

Our new floral print really captures the essence of spring, it’s a gorgeous design inspired by British flower gardens that Junko Kemi fell in love with on her trip to London.

print-pink

As usual, the most important part for me is color development. The first thing I decided was the name, “lovely pink” so of course the color had to match! Rather than a solid tone, the pink and white background gives a more three-dimensional effect, perfect for our gather dress.

print-green.jpg

Next up is green, “fresh lime”. This time we chose orange and black to contrast with the green and keep a little sweetness to the flowers, and looks great in our daily dress style.

print-yelow.jpg

Finally, our yellow design, which was actually the most difficult to develop! The impression can vary considerably depending on the tone and color combinations. We tried various shades, changing the color of the flowers from orange to pink and purple, before settling on the best combination that also looks great against the skin. Our “dramatic yellow” is the perfect partner for our flowing Marilyn dress!

I’m looking forward to enjoying spring every day when I wear these dresses!

Until next time… Yuko.

Spring styling from the kay me team

The whole kay me team is getting ready for spring, and with this exciting season fast approaching, we’re in the mood to change up our style as well!

For today’s kay me blog, we asked three members of the kay me team at our headquarters in Tokyo about their styling inspiration for spring – keep reading to learn more about what we’ll be wearing…

Yuko (production team) – “I want to wear… bright colors and i-line dresses”

staff-m.jpg

(Royal blue cache-coeur, Victory blue daily, Navy v-neck i-line)

As head of production, Yuko is known for her fantastic sense of style (and we’ve never seen her repeat the same outfit twice!). This spring, she’s selected bright colors to channel the energy of the season and reflect the beautiful flowers that burst into bloom. Our I-line dresses are a popular silhouette this year in Japan, and are available in solid colors that are the perfect choice for busy work days.

Borrow Yuko’s style with our versatile jersey dresses in solid colors and prints.

Don’t forget to keep up to date with our development stories from Yuko!

Ikue (IT team) – “I want to wear… 3/4 sleeves and knitwear”

staff-i.jpg

(Mosaic knit dress & cardigan, Navy knit dress, Blue knit dress)

More than handy with an Excel file, Ikue is also an excellent problem solver and brings this logic to her versatile workwear too. Choosing 3/4 sleeve knitwear, Ikue knows she can wear these dresses in a variety of ways for work and weekends, and with our fully machine washable knitwear there’s no need to worry about dry cleaning. Pair with matching and contrasting cardigans for an effortless look that goes well beyond the 9-to-5.

Borrow Ikue’s style with our jacquard knit dresses and matching cardigans.

If you’d like to change up your work wardrobe, take a look at Ikue’s blog post for expert advice.

Reiko (web team) – “ I want to wear… flower prints and pastels”

staff-r.jpg

(Lavender flight dress, Baby blue soft hoodie, Lavender soft hoodie)

You can usually find Reiko surrounded by a certain relaxed cartoon bear (her favorite cute character), and as kay me founder Junko Kemi’s sister, she’s been part of the kay me story since the very beginning. A big fan of casual styles, this spring she’s chosen to highlight our floral prints and soft hoodies for elegant travel style that doesn’t compromise on comfort or quality.

Borrow Reiko’s style with our vacation-ready long dress and soft hoodies.

Three ways to wear sakura-inspired pink this spring

Spring is on the horizon here in Japan, and we just can’t wait for sunshine and cherry blossom!

This week on the kay me blog we’re celebrating one of our favorite flowers – the ephemeral beauty of sakura’s delicate petals in shades of pink providing inspiration for artists of all kinds throughout the centuries.

In fact, traditional Japanese names for colors reflect the natural beauty of the country, including cherry blossom, peach, and water persimmon. Subtle tones, created by over-dyeing with gray, are referred to as “mouse” colors, and doesn’t sakuranezumi (cherry blossom mouse) have such a unique image?

While we might not have any mice on the kay me team, we’re looking forward to sharing our top pink picks with you…

One: enjoy as a dress

pink1.jpg

(Victory pink side gathered, Pink rose cache-coeur, Lovely tassel venus, Pink knit)

We’ve never met a pink dress we didn’t like… and there’s plenty to choose from on our online store! Pink also a reliably popular choice especially in store in Tokyo too, and with spring just around the corner there’s never been a better chance to explore your feminine side.

Choose from striking prints such as our Victory and Lovely Tassel designs, or opt for our thick and soft knit dress to keep you warm and cozy.

kay me stylists recommend pairing these pretty pink dresses with light-colored outerwear for maximum effect.

Two: blush in the office

pink2.jpg

(Pale pink ruffle cuff jacket, Pale pink mermaid skirt, Double layer chiffon, Strawberry macaron twist)

Bring pink into your work wardrobe this spring with our beautiful new pale pink suit with mermaid skirt and delicate ruffle cuff jacket design that mimics the look of petals and highlights your every action.

Our pink chiffon and macaron tops are an easy and versatile way to add an extra touch of pink to office outfits, and kay me stylists love pairing these pinks with navy, white and gray for striking looks. kay me founder Junko Kemi even likes to personally recommend pink for occasions when an apology is necessary!

Three: carry useful accessories

pink3.jpg

(Pink tassel tote, Pink silk wool, Pink cashmere butterfly)

Add an extra dimension to your outfits with our range of charming accessories, including original bags and hand-made scarves. For spring outings, our tote bag with pink tassel flower print is a great choice (and surprisingly roomy), pair with the matching pouches in three sizes for any occasion.

Narrowing down our selection of stoles exclusively made by expert craftspeople was a challenge for kay me stylists! Here we’ve chosen to highlight our simple pink gradation stole and incredibly soft pure cashmere stole in pink with crystal butterfly design, but don’t forget to check our full selection for scarves for any situation, to protect from the cold as well as damaging UV rays.

The washable wools that we use have been selected to provide the maximum of warmth and comfort through autumn and winter and into spring, and are thick and soft, perfect for keeping you cozy and comfortable in cold weather.

When the sun shines it’s time to wear fewer layers, but you can still enjoy our knitwear!

This week on the kay me blog, we take a look at some of our favorite knit styles for winter and beyond…

Jacquard knits

knit-jacq.jpg

Specially woven for kay me, our original jacquard rose design brings a floral feminine touch to your winter knitwear! A beautifully thick knit, choose from skirts and dresses in classic navy and warm sepia.

Dresses feature a solid top matching with jacquard weave skirt, with a soft round neck and long sleeves. Our knit skirts have a particularly stretchy waistband with a tight-fitting style that pairs wonderfully with our turtlenecks and matching zip up knits.

A touch of sparkle

knit-sparkle

Last but certainly not least, our cardigans with sparkling buttons and tops with crystal detailing, both using genuine Swarovski jewels. Our cardigans are available in red, white and charcoal gray, and tops can be found in pink, white and charcoal gray too.

Wear our cardigans with everything from matching knit skirts to contrasting solid and print dresses, and simply drape over your shoulders any time you need a touch of warmth and comfort.

Three ways to wear suit jackets this spring

If you’re in need of some inspiration for what to wear to work this spring and summer, then look no further – we’ve rounded up our three favourite ways to wear a suit jacket for the office this spring.

Needless to say that our suit jackets aren’t limited to workwear; kay me stylists love to pop on our soft and stretchy jackets over any dress as a formal extra layer, and even with their own causal clothing such as jeans at the weekend and on vacations.

Matching Pastels

ssuit1

We love soft pastel colours for spring, there’s no better time to wear these pretty shades that remind us of cherry blossom petals, blue skies and warm breezes.

Discover our matching suits in pink, light grey and beige, and pair with matching light colour kay me tops for the finishing touch.

With Prints

ssuits3

Give yourself a boost with bright florals – our pothos green print is colourful and eye-catching, great for standing out and making a striking first impression. If you’re feeling green, then also consider our dalmatian print venus drape dress, perfect with an elegant light jacket.

For a more traditional look, try our pretty polka dot dress in navy, a versatile dress that’s just as stylish in the office as days out and about in the city.

In Contrast

ssuit2

Change things up by pairing a dark jacket with a light dress and vice-versa – a simple trick that works so beautifully! kay me stylists can often be spotted in this style, showing that a well-cut jacket is always a good investment.

This style doesn’t have to be limited to dresses – try mixing and matching our skirts as well for extra adaptable looks.

Discover kay me’s seven colour suits, and get creative with your workwear and beyond…

The enduring appeal of cherry blossom

Here in Tokyo, yet again we’ve been anxiously glued the the cherry blossom forecast, with the peak predicted to hit around the end of March in the Kanto region. But why do we love these delicate little flowers so much?

sakura2.jpg

Cherry blossom ( sakura), cousin to the early-appearing and more richly coloured plum blossom, has long been seen in Japan as a metaphor for the transience of life, the pale and fragile petals quickly falling to the ground almost as soon as they bloom.

It’s no wonder that this imagery has given inspiration to countless poets, as it’s a sight to inspire even the most stony-hearted.

kay me staff love to spot the tiny chartreuse-green mejiro, Japanese white-eye, birds sitting among the branches – if you’re lucky enough to be in Japan this month, see if you can spot one too!

sakura3

The highlight of spring sakura season for many people is hanami, or cherry blossom viewing picnic, under the trees, usually in park and with friends, family or coworkers.

Needless to say that with drinks both hard and soft flowing it’s a chance not only to wax lyrical about sakura and the coming spring but also to appreciate the people we surround ourselves with.

To celebrate one of our favourite flowers, here’s a charming haiku written by Matsuo Basho around the 17th century:

Very brief –

Gleam of blossoms in the treetops

On a moonlit night.

If you’re in the mood for all things pink thanks to our flutter with sakura, take a look at our pink dress gallery, and our unique Japonism prints inspired by authentic Japanese kimono.
