Office outfit inspiration

If you’re making a career change, taking your first steps in the world of work, or are just looking for a little reassurance, kay me stylists have put together our selection of suggested looks for different offices.

Navigating the loosely-defined world of women’s workwear can feel like an obstacle course itself, however kay me is designed with busy women in mind. Since day one, kay me founder Junko Kemi has sought to create practical and stylish clothing for women at work and beyond, combining easy-care fabrics with classic styles and expert Japanese craftsmanship.

Take a look at our selection below, and put your best foot forward!

The corporate office – dark colors vs pastels

job-corp.jpg

(Greige switch skirt, Greige tailored jacket, Black i-line dress, Navy i-line dress)

There’s nothing more fitting for a corporate office than a classic matching suit – choose from our skirts and solid-color dresses paired with bolero jackets, and our tailored jackets in standard and crop lengths.

If you’re in a position to push the boundaries a little, then for spring and summer lighten your look with our greige (gray-beige) and suit set up that unites beautiful tailoring with a softer shade.

The business casual office – prints vs plain colors

job-buscas.jpg

(Caramel geo x navy asymmetry, Khaki x black i-line dress, Beige x black frill dress)

Our ‘docking’ dresses, a combination of contrasting skirt and top in one, are a great choice for that most difficult of dress codes, business casual. Dress them up with a matching jacket, add interest with a striking color jacket, or add more casual elements with our cardigans in long and short lengths.

For a different look, try playing on the nature of the docking dress with our printed and solid color versions.

The creative office – color vs monotone

job-creat.jpg

(Victory black side gather, Brick red aztec cache-coeur, Navy stripe piping)

We’re certainly not ones to shy away from a print here at the kay me atelier in Tokyo, and a creative office, or one with a more relaxed clothing policy can be a chance to explore more sartorial options.

For those looking to ease into prints and patterns, we recommend our monotone prints in classics such as  stripes, or for even more inspiration explore our categories!

Introducing… Team coordinates, from kay me

Have you seen our new page? Visitors to the new kay me home page may have noticed a new section – team coordinates.

Featuring three key members of the kay me team, including founder and lead designer Junko Kemi, the team coordinates showcase the variety of ways to wear kay me through the week.

Enjoy a few examples…

Junko – TUESDAY: LECTURING

team1.jpg

Today, I have some consulting work.

I’m getting to the stage in my life when I am looking for sophistication as well as professionalism when choosing the perfect suit! This stretchy Lace Peplum Suit allows me to attend business seminars with elegance and grace.

The pale-tone lilac color is soft and pairs beautifully well with black, navy, gray, white, and an array of colors with ease.

Nick – NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

team2.jpg

Strong colors always inspire me, and nothing more so than a powerful blue. Blue reminds me of the ocean and sky – both seemingly limitless, a feeling I want to drive and inspire me through the beginning of a new year.

We all set resolutions in January, but 70% are broken within a month.

Adding a powerful-feeling Riders Jacket to the look gives the extra strength to carry on those resolutions into February and beyond. Our White Tassel Tote Bag stands out in contrast to the two tone setup on dress and jacket – this look is all about ‘feeling on top of the world’.

Hiroko – FRIDAY BUSINESS PARTY

team3.jpg

I attended a party Friday night at the embassy, a small gathering that I was invited to by a few close connections.

This Rose Jersey Dress gives the impression of an elegant yet approachable heroine, which gave me the opportunity to speak freely with many of the guests. I was able to make more contacts, even some that will open doors to new opportunities.

On cold nights like that evening, the Elegant Trench Coat not only keeps me warm but also adds a touch of luxury to my ensemble.

kay me bags for all situations

Here at the kay me atelier in Tokyo, we know that a bag is one of the final steps to completing your full outfit, ready to face the world.

While we might not have the perfect answer to the debate of matching your shoes to your bag (stylishly chic or too matchy-matchy?), we asked our team of stylists for their ideas for selecting our original made-in-Japan kay me bags for different situations.

Don’t forget that kay me bags are cruelty-free and specially designed for busy days – what’s not to love?

Daily commute

bag-commute

Our two-way business bag can be carried either as a backpack or held by the top straps, making it a great choice for those with plenty of items to carry with them. If a longer shoulder strap is preferable, our PC bag is the perfect choice. Both PC and two-way business bags feature zip closures with extra-wide mouths, built-in laptop sleeve and plenty of useful internal and external pockets.

Wear with… kay me’s machine washable stretchy suit separates for a variety of professional and polished looks.

Creating contrast

bag-contrast.jpg

Sometimes we like our bag to make a bold statement, and with kay me’s range of rich colors, there’s sure to be a bag that catches your eye. Choose from our abstract floral-inspired Tassel print on soft neoprene in two tones, as well as our bright red (a particular favorite in Tokyo!) and metallic silver bags, all available as surprisingly spacious compact tote bags, business bags, pouches and small essentials cases too.

Wear with… everything from sharp tailoring to relaxed knitwear.

Matching tones

bag-matching.jpg

Calling all color-coordinators! The simplest way to create a cohesive outfit is to pick one color from your clothing and choose a bag in the same shade, such as our red bag and cardigan with Swarovski crystal buttons. Change things up by going for a similar tone, like our silver bag and charcoal gray cardigan, or pick out two colors from our Tassel print, off-white and gray, as the elements of your outfit.

Wear with… matching Japan-made knitwear, naturally! Try our selected cashmere scarves for even more possibilities.

Wearing work dresses in three easy steps

Hi everyone, it’s Ikue from kay me’s online team in Tokyo!

Did you know that before working with kay me, I was a member of a major international IT company here in Japan? I often wore kay me dresses and jackets in the office, and now I get to bring my skills to one of my favourite fashion companies.

Today I’d like to share with you some tips for dressing for business…

So, do you often wear print dresses? “Of course, I love them!” I hear you say! But for those working in a more conservative industry, it takes a little more courage to wear something bold (I felt the same way too).

kay me dresses are so easy to wear and such a time-saver when working long hours, so it’s a shame not to wear your favourite dresses every day…

Today’s theme is: stepping up your work dresses!

Step 1: Start with neutral solid colours

ikue1

First of all, try basic neutral colours such as white, grey, navy and black. (Why not try filtering by colour on our dresses page…)

I also recommend wearing these colours in our daily and Venus drape dress styles. With our I-line dresses, the silhouette is so crisp, it’s easy and comfortable to wear in a suit-like way.

All our dresses pair beautifully with kay me suit jackets – choose from matching or contrasting colours.

Step 2: Play with colour and shape

ikue2.jpg

When you get used to your new dress style, try branching out with different colours and shapes.

For example, our popular new blue-grey shade is so pretty and flattering. It’s not as strong or sombre as navy or black, but it’s soft with a sense of neatness, a great alternative for the office.

Here I’ve chosen to highlight our Marilyn short-sleeve dresses with cache-coeur bust and flared hem – this style adds just a touch of grown-up femininity.

Step 3: Two-colour print challenge

ikue3.jpg

Even for “print beginners”, a classic combination such as black and off-white is easy to wear and coordinate. Just pick one colour to highlight from the print, in the case of our Tassel Flower print off-white, and use this as the main colour for your jacket.

This dress also looks wonderful with black, or even bringing out the hints of grey in the print.

Also, by wearing a jacket it constrains the print a little, just in case you’re still nervous!

So, what do you think? Instant elegance, with lots of styling ideas for you try this week at work!
